Q&A: Meet Raul! Blown Away’s Newest Colorist!

The newest member of our glam squad… and just in time for the launch of our Beauty Bar!

For the month of OCTOBER, we’re offering 30% off your first color service as a Blown Away welcome to the Beauty Bar!

Gianna sat down with Raul and had a COLORFUL conversation about his experiences in the world of hair.

GIANNA: What made you decide to pursue cosmetology?

RAUL: After high school, I took some time off and started working Part-Time at Ulta. I just thought of it as a job—I was a cashier there. One day I got stuck having to help someone with makeup, and I liked the feeling. I knew it wasn’t makeup that I liked, but I would watch the hair stylists and thought it would be so cool if I could be the one to transform people.

GIANNA: When did you know that you wanted to specialize in color?

RAUL: When I was studying I wasn’t the most enthusiastic about haircuts, but with color there is so much room for expression and creativity. You can make it your own. Every service you perform you’re able to see the difference. Even if it’s just a touch-up – you see the change.

Raul doing what he loves!

GIANNA: What is your favorite thing about doing color?

RAUL: My favorite thing is being able to create a head-turning color. I like to do more trendy looks like a beautiful balayage or a nice ombre – or even colors that are super fun like a pink or a purple. Either way, my favorite part is knowing that when my client is walking down the street they’re going to be turning heads.

GIANNA: What do you try to do differently as a colorist that isn’t the standard?

RAUL: I try to make sure my consultation is on point. From beginning to end I’m listening to their concerns. I want them to feel comfortable so if they feel like they want something different they communicate and I can cater to their needs. That way the result is what they’re looking for. When a color doesn’t turn out, it’s usually due to a lack of communication. I try to leave that door open.

GIANNA: How do you continue to educate yourself?

RAUL: Lots and lots of YouTube, Instagram and even joining communities on Facebook. I think that the best people to learn from are other colorists and stylists – they’ve had different experiences. I like to post my questions and compare different answers and opinions.

GIANNA: Why did you join the glam squad here at Blown Away?

RAUL: I had reached a plateau in my career at my last position. More than anything, I came to Blown Away for the opportunity to work with Wella color, work on my styling skills and surround myself with the talents of the staff.

GIANNA: How do you like working with Wella?

RAUL: I really like the lightener. If someone wants to be blonde it’s easier to get them there with Wella lightener. The color saturates nicely and covers amazing. It’s universal and even has added a shine to the clients’ hair I’ve worked on so far which is an added bonus!

GIANNA: How is Blown Away’s color experience different from the standard?

RAUL: I think what we do differently is that we truly care about the integrity of the hair. We mix Olaplex into our color to help protect it as opposed to repairing it once the damage is done. Most salons sell that as an add-on, but we’ve added it into the service to make sure the hair is cared for. Aside from that, the opportunity to get such a gorgeous blow dry afterwards really helps you see the full potential in your hair and show off your color to the world!

You are lucky to have Raul as a colorist. Literally one of the most talented, passionate, and amazing human beings on Earth. For being so young and relatively new to the business (as opposed to someone who’s been coloring for 20+ years…), his raw talent never ceases to amaze me.
